Education Alternatives in Providence, Rhode Island

Seven of the fourteen institutions of higher learning in Rhode Island have campuses in Providence. They are:

Brown University is a private university, and it is the third-oldest institution of higher education in New England and the seventh-oldest in the United States. It is a member of the Ivy League, and is home to the only undergraduate Egyptology department in the United States. About 92 to 95% of Brown students are admitted to one of their top three law school choices. For business schools, the figure is nearly 100%, and finally, Brown consistently ranks in the top 5 colleges in the country in terms of the percentage of students accepted into medical school.

Community College of Rhode Island consists of six campuses and enrolls over 16,000 students across the state. CCRI is currently the largest community college in New England. The college offers the following degrees: Associate in Arts (A.A.), Associate in Science (A.S.), Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.), Associate in Applied Science in Technical Studies (A.A.S.-T.S.), and Associate in Fine Arts (A.F.A.). Several one-year certificates are also awarded.

Johnson & Wales University is a private, nonprofit, co-educational, career-oriented university. Providence, Rhode Island, USA, is home of JWU's main and largest of four currently operating campuses in the United States. JWU currently has in excess of 16,000 students enrolled in business, culinary, hospitality, education, and technology programs.

Providence College is a Catholic college. With a 2004-2005 enrollment of about 3,900 undergraduate students and about 900 graduate students, the college is known for its programs in the liberal arts and sciences. Providence College has been ranked by US News and World Report as one of the top two Regional Colleges in the Northeast for nine consecutive years.

Rhode Island College is a state-supported comprehensive college. Rhode Island College was founded in 1854, and is the oldest of the three public institutions of higher education that operate under the aegis of the Board of Governors for Higher Education.

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is one of the premier fine arts institutions in the United States. RISD is widely regarded as one of the best art schools in the country, and has been consistently named the best Master of Fine Arts program by U.S. News & World Report.

University of Rhode Island is the principal public research university in the State of Rhode Island. Tts main campus is in Kingston, Rhode Island, and there are three other campuses located throughout the state (including Providence). The University comprises ten colleges & over 100 majors.


The Providence Public School District serves about 26,000 students from pre-Kindergarten to grade 12. The district has 25 elementary schools, nine middle schools, and thirteen high schools. The Providence Public School District features magnet schools at the middle and high school level, and there are also two centers for students with special needs.
